The route, drawn freehand.

A counter-clockwise loop sized for August: down through Spain when it's hot, across the South of France when it's golden, into Italy when it's eating-everything season, over to Greece when the sea is warm enough to sleep in.

  • Climb Monte Igueldo for the view + funicular

Roma → Naples · Amalfi

3 h drive · 250 km · Pompeii detour

Pompeii on the way (factor 3 hours, take water). Pizza for lunch in Naples — the inventors invented it well. Drive up the Amalfi coast: Positano hotels are insane money, sleep in Salerno or Praiano instead.

Off the rocks. Boats bobbing. Pastel houses staring back. Aperol after, no plans for the rest of the day.

Three hours of cliff trail, lemon groves, sea on one side, vertical drop on the other. Bring water. A lot.

VI.

Logistics & local hacks.

Six rules of thumb that keep the budget honest and the trip moving.

🚗

Our car · pre-flight check

Service before we leave: oil, tyres, brakes, AC. Confirm the insurance covers all 4 countries — Greece especially (some French insurers exclude it; ask for a green card / extension). European breakdown cover for €40 is cheap peace of mind over 6 200 km.

⛴️

The ferries

Bari → Patras and Patras → Ancona. Always book a cabin, not just a deck seat — 16-21 hours is too long without a bed. Superfast and ANEK Lines are the operators. Book 2 months ahead in summer.

🏨

Where we sleep

Mix: 3-star hotels in big cities (split €70/night = €35 each), Airbnbs for 2-night stops, hostels for the budget days. Always cancellable rates. Outskirts > centre when parking matters.

🍝

Eat smart

Breakfast at the supermarket (Mercadona, Conad, AB). Lunch on-the-go: bocadillo / panini / pita. Dinner is the event — but go where locals eat (look for menus only in the local language). Aperitivo & tapas = dinner hack.

🅿️

Parking is the enemy

Old centres in Spain & Italy have ZTL/restricted zones — €100 fines by camera. Park outside the centre, use the metro/walk. Always check the hotel has parking or recommends one.

💰

Money

Revolut or N26 for zero forex fees. Carry €100 cash for tolls, ferry snacks, and the occasional cash-only taverna. Settle the running tab between us every 3 days so neither of us forgets who paid for what.

Final word

So Malek,
are we doing this?

I've done the boring half — the routes, the ferries, the maths. If you're a yes, we start booking this weekend (the Alhambra and the ferries fill up fast). Reply with a date when you can talk and I'll bring the wine.
